Dictionaries and Encyclopaedias

dicThe library has many dictionaries and encyclopedias but most of them are not for lending. Why is it so? Dictionaries and encyclopedias are a help in your studies and are needed in the library for looking up a word and get its meaning or translation.

Today, many of the dictionaries and encyclopedias are freely available on the web and the library also has some paid subscriptions. Before it was almost never possible to borrow dictionaries and encyclopedias but today we have a few of Norstedts English-Swedish dictionary for loan (located at floor 3, shelf 423) and we often make older editions for loan, while the newest one get to be REF – and stay in the library. Please visit the library’s databases and see what kind dictionaries and encyclopedias we have for help online!

The Women’s Wear Daily Archive

We are currently testing an extensive archive of Women’s Wear Daily, one of the biggest fashion magazines in the United States, widely considered the ‘Wall St Journal’ of the fashion industry. The test will run until November 19, so hurry to test the archive before the trial expires.

A comprehensive archive of Women’s Wear Daily, from the first issue in 1910 to material from within the last twelve months, reproduced in high-resolution images. Every page, article, advertisement and cover has been included, with searchable text and indexing.

The Women’s Wear Daily Archive preserves one of the fashion industry’s most influential reads. Key moments in the history of the industry, as well as major designers, brands, retailers and advertisers are all covered in this publication of record.

To access the archive, you must identify yourself as a student or employee at the University of Borås. Follow this link for access to the database.

Scientific theories & methods

Do you want to know more about scientific theories and methods?

The library offes a test of SAGE Research Methods, a database for theories and methods. Which should you choose? What does the terms mean? SAGE Research Methods will help you with a “method map” and over 700 works within the area of methods, from dicitionaries and video clips to articles and manuals.

We are testing it until 16 th of June and the database can be found under Trial Access to Databases on our web site.

Below an image from of a “method map” can be seen. In the example we have gone through qualitative research and qualitative data collection and ended up in ethnography. Here some articles, books, key people and other material related to ethnography can be found and maybe it will help you to design your own experiment or research.

Endnote news

EndNote is the reference management program that the University of Borås provide for their students and researchers. The program simplifies your reference management and can help you manage your bibliographic references and create the right type of reference for you. Most databases and our library discovery system Summon supports an export of references to EndNote. It’s then easy to connect Endnote to Word so that you can export references into your working document and create a proper reading list. Be sure to select the correct format for your references, the most common are Harvard and APA, and you will find information and guides to both on the library website. But be sure to read the instructions of your particular teacher and institution for which referencesystem that should be used.

We’ve made two short guides, they are in swedish but it’s easy to follow them just by looking at the instructions. How to export from Summon to Endnote and How to export from Google Scholar to Endnote. Otherwise you are welcome to the informationdesk, and we will show you how to make it work.

A novelty is that Endnote is soon updated to Endnote X6, then a sync function between desktop Endnote and WebEndnote will work, this was not previously possible. There is also an app for iPad that can be downloaded from iTunes, which also can sync to your Endnote account. But importantly, this applies only when the X6 version is in place, which will take a couple of weeks yet, and we will have to return to it.
